WHY PRUNE YOURJAPANESE MAPLE?
More Than Just Cutting Branches
A beautiful Japanese maple is shaped over time. Thoughtful pruning helps reveal the tree’s natural structure while maintaining its health, balance, and graceful character.
Our approach is not simply to make a tree smaller. We carefully consider each branch—removing unwanted growth, opening crowded areas, and guiding the tree toward a more refined and natural form.

See the Transformation
THE TREE
This Japanese maple had become very full and dense, hiding much of its beautiful trunk and branch structure. Our goal was to open the tree while preserving its natural character.
THE SITE & CHALLENGE
The maple sits prominently in front of the house beside the walkway and road, making it a natural showpiece. The sloped planting area required extra care while working. A large Gardenia growing underneath had also spread into the maple’s visual space, causing the two plants to compete for attention.
OUR APPROACH
We selectively removed unwanted and crowded growth to reveal the maple’s structure and create a lighter, more graceful appearance. We also trimmed the Gardenia and repositioned several of its long branches so it would complement the maple rather than compete with it.
THE RESULT
The maple now has a clearer silhouette, a more open and refined structure, and a stronger presence in the landscape. The surrounding Gardenia frames the tree more naturally, allowing the Japanese maple to become the focal point.
THE TREE
The tree was large, healthy, and full, but the canopy had developed a flat appearance with very little variation in height. Our goal was to create more dimension and movement while preserving the tree’s natural beauty.
THE SITE & CHALLENGE
This Japanese maple is a centerpiece of the front landscape, highly visible from the street and walkway. The lower branches had grown dense and flat, reducing the tree’s graceful appearance and hiding much of its structure. Working carefully around the surrounding rocks and plants was also important.
OUR APPROACH
We removed dead, crossing, and unwanted branches first. Bamboo supports were then used to gently lift selected branches, while ropes were used to carefully lower others. By repositioning branches at different heights, we opened the canopy and created more vertical green space.
THE RESULT
The canopy now has greater depth, movement, and a more natural appearance. The branch structure is more visible and balanced, with distinct layers of foliage and open space. The tree retains its fullness while having a lighter, more graceful character.
